Michael J. Schaefer, Fulbright Scholarship Winner

Michael J. Schaefer, who graduated from Illinois State University in 2007 with a B.S. in Anthropology, has received a Fulbright Full Grant to conduct archaeological research in Brazil March-December 2009.

Mike worked with Anthropology faculty members Gina Bessa and Jim Skibo, both previous recipients of Fulbright Grants to Brazil, and Professor Adriana Dias of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) to develop a proposal for the survey, excavation, and laboratory analysis of artifacts from archaeological sites in Itapuã State Park near Porto Alegre.

As part of ongoing collaborations between Illinois State and UFRGS, Mike participated Dr. Dias' 2006 excavation of a prehistoric rock shelter site in Brazil, and Dr. Dias and her students visited Jim Skibo's archaeological field school at Grand Island, Michigan last year.
