Truman Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes government or public service among juniors.

Screening Timeline for 2008 Competition

  • No later than October 15, 2007 - Students complete an application profile to confirm credentials and schedule individual meetings with Becky Mentzer, Honors Assistant Director & National Scholarship Advisor, by appointment, to go over application process.

  • Immediately after eligibility is established - Truman online nomination form is completed by Becky so that students can begin work on application.

  • Students can meet with or send drafts to Becky for review and suggestions before the deadline.

  • Friday, November 9, 2007 - Students must be able to obtain three faculty members to complete evaluation forms and reference letters each with a very specific focus; information is part of the online application. (letters are sent first to Honors Program, Campus Box 6100 - do not submit online until after screening committee meets)

  • Week of November 12, 2007 - Distributed to Campus Screening Committee

  • Between November 26 and December 7, 2007 - Campus Screening Committee interviews candidates to discuss application, to make helpful suggestions for final application, and to make nominations.
  • Friday, January 18, 2008 - Student returns final draft of application to Honors Program by 10:00 a.m. (no late applications can be accepted)

  • Friday, January 25, 2008 - Honors Program sends in all nominations by use of online website

  • February 2008 - National Truman Scholarship Review Committee meets to recommend finalists

  • Foundation will schedule interviews with finalists

  • Should Illinois State University have finalists, several mock interviews will be scheduled.

  • March 2008 - Scholars and Faculty Representatives are notified of awards
