This scholarship recognizes government or public service among juniors.

Screening Timeline for 2009 Competition

  • No later than October 17, 2008: Students complete an application profile to confirm credentials and schedule individual meetings with Becky Mentzer, Honors Associate Director & National Scholarship Advisor, by appointment, to go over application process.

  • Immediately after eligibility is established: Truman online nomination form is completed by Becky so that students can begin work on application.

  • Students can meet with or send drafts to Becky for review and suggestions before the deadline.

  • Friday, November 7, 2008: Students must be able to obtain three faculty members to complete evaluation forms and reference letters each with a very specific focus; information is part of the online application (letters are sent first to Honors Program, Campus Box 6100—should not be submitted online until after screening committee meets)
  • Friday, November 7, 2008: Completed student portion of applications are due to Honors Program
  • Week of November 10, 2008: Distributed to Campus Screening Committee

  • Between November 24 and December 7, 2008: Campus Screening Committee interviews candidates to discuss application, to make helpful suggestions for final application, and to make nominations.
  • Friday, January 23, 2009: Student returns final draft of application to Honors Program by 10:00 a.m. (no late applications can be accepted)

  • January 30, 2009: Honors Program sends in all nominations by use of the online website to comply with the February 3, 2009 deadline.

  • February 17, 2009: Finalists will be announced by the Foundation. Should Illinois State University have finalists, several mock interviews will be scheduled.

  • March 2 – 20, 2009: Regional Selection Panels will interview Finalists.

  • March 26, 2009: Scholars will be posted to the Foundation’s website.

  • May 31, 2009: Awards Ceremony for recipients in Liberty, MO.
