Goldwater Scholarship

This scholarships is open to students in science, math and engineering (sophomore or junior standing; must have one full year left to study as an undergraduate).

Four students may be nominated by the university. To become a candidate, students may be nominated by their department or may self-nominate provided they meet the qualifications.

Individual meetings need to be scheduled by students with Becky Mentzer, Honors Associate Director & National Scholarship Advisor, by appointment, call 438-2559, by October 1.

Screening Timeline for 2009 Competition

  • No later than October 13, 2008: Schedule an individual meeting with Becky Mentzer, Honors Associate Director & National Scholarship Advisor, by appointment.
    • Complete an application profile to confirm credentials
    • Begin the application process
  • By November 17, 2008: Students who meet the qualifications complete the online application; request all required transcripts; and obtain three reference letters from faculty members (can be sent directly to Honors Program, Campus Box 6100)
  • Students may meet with or email drafts to Becky for review and suggestions before the deadline. Students can have their research essay read by a professor in their department who is familiar with scientific writing; however, the essay is to be written by the student applicant.
  • Monday, November 17, 2008: Complete applications due to Honors Program no later than 10:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, November 18, 2008: Applications are distributed to Campus Screening Committee.
  • Week of December 1, 2008: Campus Screening Committee convenes to discuss candidates’ applications and nominate up to four students.
  • Week of December 1, 2008: Applications are returned to nominees with recommendations. (may involve individual meetings with nominees & National Scholarship Advisor)
  • By Friday, December 5, 2008: Students who were not selected are notified.
  • Friday, January 23, 2009: Nominees return final draft of their applications no later than 10:00 a.m. No late applications will be submitted to the Foundation.
  • By Thursday, January 29, 2009: Honors Program sends in all nominations by overnight mail or submits them electronically to meet the deadlines listed below:
  • January 30, 2009: All applications must be electronically submitted and all supporting documents must arrive by February 2, 2009.

  • March 2009: The national Goldwater Foundation meets to select Scholars and Alternates.
  • Early April 2009: Scholars and Faculty Representatives are notified of awards.
