Disney: The Myth, Power, and Culture of an American Icon - Spring 2008

Final Paper/Presentation

(Students will choose one of two options)

1) Disney Film Analysis or Disney Corporation Issue: complete a 3-5 page paper analyzing a Disney film or a Disney corporation issue with at least 3 references and present a 10-minute summary of the paper to the class, including taking questions or leading discussion. The specific topic may be chosen by the student with prior approval of the instructor.

Or

2) Group Project with Visual Aids: complete a group project and presentation with visual aids and at least 3 references cited in the presentation that will provide further insights on a topic discussed in class or from a list of possible topics provided.

Further Guidelines

  • Must do an oral presentation to class regardless of which option is chosen.
  • Be prepared to lead a discussion and/or answer questions.
  • Group presentations will be approximately 20 minutes.
  • Paper summaries will be approximately 10 minutes.
  • Topics and group members must be approved by instructor.
  • Group size will be determined based on number of students choosing this option; most likely 3-4 students per group.
  • Random drawing of date you will present: April 21, 23, 28, or 30

Business side of Disney

Marketing – who are the consumers; how does Disney determine consumers' wants; influence consumers toward their products & create consumer awareness of them? Marketing is necessary for any business growth & Disney has certainly endured and prospered through their marketing strategies. What are they doing right? What are they criticized for doing and why?

Advertising - every major medium is used to deliver advertising messages for Disney, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, video games, the Internet, and billboards. Research this & elaborate.

Merchandising, per Wikipedia, refers to the “methods, practices and operations conducted to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity.” Tell us about Disney & merchandising. Positive and negative elements?  

Music – how it is used in films; how it affects the story; impact on viewer

Walt Disney , the man (maybe vs. Michael Eisner)

Comparison of films with written fairy tales they are based on; how did Disney change the story line; what do critics say about this; what is your analysis?

Hidden messages and images – any truth to these? Are some completely fabricated? Harmful or overblown?

Information that might be included in projects:

  • Gender, race, class, stereotype issues
  • Film clips
  • Marketing images
  • Examples of advertising
  • Music – sound tracks; lyrics
  • Impact of current issues & events (or those at time film was produced)
  • Results of your own unscientific survey or interviews
