International Component

International Studies Options

The number of hours required to complete the International Studies Component will vary depending on which option is selected.  Three options are available to fulfill this requirement.

Option 1: Study Abroad, fall or spring semester

Fall or spring semester of full-time study abroad. Must have a minimum of 12 hours transfer back to Illinois State to be considered full-time and receive your PS monies.

Option 2: Area Studies

Nine hours of course work focused on a specific geographical/cultural area. For more information, please refer to Area Studies and Supplemental Course Options.

Option 3: Combination Program

Summer study abroad and supplemental coursework totaling nine hours. Depending on the length of the summer study abroad program and the amount of credit generated from the experience, students complete additional area studies courses to total the nine-hour requirement. Watkins and Rose Scholarships

Watkins and Rose Scholarships are designated study abroad scholarships available to Presidential Scholars.  Donations for these scholarships have been made in honor of former Illinois State University President Lloyd Watkins and in honor of Clarence and Stella Rose. The application deadline for awards for Summer 2009, Fall 2009, or Spring 2010 has passed. The next application process will be in Spring 2010.

Watkins and Rose Scholars

Jennifer Richter is a senior English Education major, who studied in London, England, in summer 2009.  She chose this location because she was interested in learning more about the literature that came out of the city of London and to actually see Shakespeare performed in the Globe Theatre.  She took a class that studied London’s history through its museums, which included daily travels to different historical landmarks or museums within London. Danielle Kiefner is a junior Health Education major who studied abroad at King’s College Urban Education Program in London in summer 2008. Danielle chose this program for her international experience because of its commitment to diversity through hands-on participation in a school with children of various ethnic backgrounds and religions. The school is a refuge for asylum seekers, many who have been persecuted for their beliefs. Danielle wants to be able to observe their customs, traditions, and ways of life. Danielle is interested in educating others on important health information and also working as an advocate for social issues affecting people’s quality of life, so this program will be career-related as well. Kayleigh McGann is a junior Bilingual/Bicultural Education major who studied in Taxco, Mexico, in summer 2008. She chose to study in Mexico in order to improve her fluency in Spanish because she knows that the goal of bilingual education is to integrate both English and Spanish into her future classroom. She is interested in learning as much as she can about the culture as well, by living in a host home and going to school with Mexican students. Several side trips will help her to understand more about the history and culture. Read about Kayleigh's experience in Mexico

Lauren Rowley is a sophomore Nursing major who studied in Florence, Italy, in the spring 2009 semester. Lauren studied at the Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy, and completed some of her PS Core requirements. She was excited to learn about Renaissance art and artists. She also planned to study ballet, learn more about religions, and visit the Vatican. Lauren was excited to be able to visit one of the cultural capitals of the world.
