Ethnic Studies Research Opportunities

Dr. Susan Kalter
Associate Professor/Director of Ethnic Studies
English Department/Ethnic Studies Program

Campus Box 4240
438-8660

Looking for an Ethnic Studies Program Assistant for June and July, about 10-12 hours per week, to:

  • design three different websites for the program, in consultation with myself, other faculty in the program, potential users of the site, and models from here and elsewhere, under my direction
  • These would be the main Ethnic Studies website (new), a new website for the Native American Studies program, and a new website for the African American Studies program.
  • design, and get into production, brochures, pamphlets, etc., for the three minors, again in consultation with several users/potential users

The assistant would probably work with other faculty and other offices on campus (such as Planning and Institutional Research, the Alumni Office, Dean's Offices and Diversity Advocacy) to research alumni career paths, faculty profiles for posting on the site and perhaps cycling through as interest grabbers, etc.

In some cases, as with the Alumni Office, I would be holding these meetings with these offices and bringing the assistant with me for the first meeting to introduce them and help familiarize them with the scope of the concerns.

Student Qualities: The optimum student would be someone with an interest in ethnic studies in some way, someone who has taken courses in the program, even if s/he is not minoring in it.

Someone who also has a good aptitude at web design and other visual information presentation.

Someone who can create a set of modern looking, non-stereotyping sites and marketing materials that appeal to persons from many different backgrounds while conveying a sense of the program focus.

I'm looking for someone who is both reliable and creative, who can work independently but also has good social skills to interact with various people from whom s/he needs information.

Someone who is okay with multiple revision efforts and open to artistic critique toward a shared goal.
