Description: In the fall of 2007, I will begin a longitudinal, multi-method study of sociology majors at ISU. This is a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) study. I am interested in looking at their development of the sociological imagination, autonomous learning, and an identity as a sociologist over time. I will be gathering data from a cohort of majors beginning in Soc 206 and following them through the major and Soc 300. I will use questionnaires, interviews, and possibly other methods.

Student Qualities: I need a research assistant who is majoring or minoring in Sociology or in a related field (Psychology, Communication, Politics & Government) and who has an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning. In addition, the student should have good library research skills, writing skills, computer, and interpersonal skills. Finally, he/she should be willing to learn a variety of other research skills.

I am seeking a student as a Research Assistant in Fall 2007.  The following Spring & Summer I will be conducting eight months of social science fieldwork in New York (January - August of 2008).  The Research Assistant’s primary responsibility would be working with me in Fall 2007 on diverse research and logistical tasks to prepare for this project.

Student Qualities: The ideal student would be self-motivated, capable of working autonomously, with light supervision, and according to deadlines.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to receive a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how a lengthy off-site field research project is organized and conducted.

Between 2006 and 2010 I am responsible for producing a newsletter each semester for an international academic community (the International Sociological Association).  I am interested in working with Honors students to create a graphically interesting newsletter.  I'd be interested in students assisting in all stages of the newsletter-making process:  corresponding with authors, tracking particular parts of the project, page layouts, illustrations, etc.  The project can be as grand or as simple as the talent pool working on the newsletter in any given semester.

Student Qualities: I am ideally searching for students interested in English and/or graphic design.  Particularly relevant majors include English, Graphic Design, Graphic Communications, Communication, Art, Mass Communication, and Public Relations.  I am looking for a team of self-motivated students, capable of working autonomously, with light supervision, and according to deadlines.

For students who are creating a portfolio of work, this can be an ideal project.  For students seeking to demonstrate publishing experience, this would be an excellent resume builder.
