Are you interested in a research career, either in academics, the government, or the private sector? For the Spring semester, Dr. Aaron Pitluck, in the department of Sociology & Anthropology, is offering a rare research mentorship opportunity. He is looking for a Research Assistant, with whom he will meet weekly, to assist in a variety of research tasks. The principal project will be an interdisciplinary literature review of how money managers make their investment decisions in global stock markets. The RA will be responsible for obtaining articles, writing some synopses, and reading, critiquing and discussing the weekly drafts of the manuscript. In some weeks additional research tasks are possible for related research projects.
The Research Assistantship can be offered as either Honors credit or a SOA Independent Study, worth three credit hours. It is estimated that the Research Assistant will spend approximately 8-11 total hours per week on this project. The position is unpaid.
A social science major or business major is preferable. No background in sociology, finance or economics is necessary. You must be self-disciplined, capable of working autonomously, with light supervision, and according to deadlines. In addition, you must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5, and be available for weekly meetings on either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
If you are interested in applying, you should send, as soon as possible, an email expressing why you are interested in the position and a copy of your transcript to Aaron.Pitluck@ilstu.edu. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Between 2006 and 2010 I am responsible for producing a newsletter each semester for an international academic community (the International Sociological Association). I am interested in working with Honors students to create a graphically interesting newsletter. I'd be interested in students assisting in all stages of the newsletter-making process: corresponding with authors, tracking particular parts of the project, page layouts, illustrations, etc. The project can be as grand or as simple as the talent pool working on the newsletter in any given semester.
Student Qualities: I am ideally searching for students interested in English and/or graphic design. Particularly relevant majors include English, Graphic Design, Graphic Communications, Communication, Art, Mass Communication, and Public Relations. I am looking for a team of self-motivated students, capable of working autonomously, with light supervision, and according to deadlines.
For students who are creating a portfolio of work, this can be an ideal project. For students seeking to demonstrate publishing experience, this would be an excellent resume builder.
