Course Objectives, Information, and Policies

This course is designed to assist you in making a successful transition to Illinois State University so you can continue to do well in an academic environment. This course will lay the framework for your plan of study, campus involvement, participation in Honors, and more. Over the course of the semester, you will:

  • Become familiar with campus resources, organizations and opportunities
  • Discover how learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom by exploring civic engagement, service learning, and study abroad opportunities
  • Develop an educational plan that includes major, minor, general education and graduation requirements
  • Understand Honors Program requirements and opportunities
  • Build positive relationships with other class members
  • Take responsibility for what you want to experience in college

This class is meant to be fun and interactive. You can get the most out of this course by coming to class on time, prepared and ready to contribute actively to each class period. Active participation in class discussions and assignments is vital to your success in the course. (attendance/participation policy)

Required Materials

  • Illinois State University 2007-2008 Undergraduate Catalog (provided at Preview)
  • Various readings or handouts (distributed in class or posted on the syllabus website)
  • No required textbook to purchase; however, you will be asked to select two campus events to attend from a list of options to fulfill the Campus Activities Assignment. Some of these events have a fee, while others are free.

Web-based Syllabus

Many of you may not be familiar with this type of syllabus; however, many professors are utilizing them. An online syllabus is subject to change, so checking the website weekly is strongly encouraged; announcements about changes & updates will be made in class; ultimately you are responsible for the information posted on the website. If there is ever anything you do not understand, feel free to contact your HPM or Honors Advisor or bring your questions to class.

Our syllabus includes:

  • Web links that will serve as resources for learning more about the topic and completing the assignments.
  • Helpful handouts related to the week's topic may be given out in class or posted on the website within the course syllabus or assignment descriptions.
  • Access to all handouts and resources at your convenience, which may be printed if you so choose. You will be advised in advance if you are required to bring a handout from the website to class.
  • Assignment information, including descriptions, due dates, point values, and grading information.

Using Your ilstu Email Account

Your HPM will send announcements about class and upcoming Honors activities to your ilstu e-mail account. The Honors Program will also send you information about scholarships, registration and Honors opportunities through the Honors Program listserv, which can only be sent to your Illinois State e-mail account.

If you have another account that you use more frequently, you should arrange to have e-mail from Illinois State forwarded to your preferred email address.
