Attendance/Participation

Active participation in class discussions and serious attention to assignments are vital to students’ success in this course. You will get the most out of this seminar by coming to each class period on time, prepared and ready to contribute actively. Just as in your other courses, you are expected to attend each class session; if an absence is necessary, you are responsible for material covered in class and the work due on the date missed.

Attendance is taken each week; however, rather than simply checking attendance, your participation and contributions will also be evaluated. You have the opportunity to receive up to two points each class period by being on time, prepared, engaged in discussion and contributing to class activities.

If you are late, aren’t prepared or your presence detracts others from a quality experience (reading the Vidette or a textbook for another class, sleeping, talking or muttering to others, etc.), you will receive one or zero points depending on the extent of the above.

You will receive zero points if you don’t show up at all or you were completely inappropriate or disruptive to the class.

Of the 215 points you can earn in the course, 25 are for attendance and participation. Since this is slightly above 10% of the total, it can make a difference in your earned grade. If you receive all 24 points for the 12 weeks we hold class sessions, you will receive an additional point and earn the full 25 points for attendance/participation.

Class will not be held the week of Labor Day and seminar will conclude the week before Thanksgiving. In exchange, you will be required to attend two experiences outside of regular class time, a fine arts event and a speaker event. In addition, for the "Your Choice" assignment you will pick one of six workshops to attend, which will be held outside of regular class time.  There will be a variety of dates, times, and workshop topics to select from.

There will be no final exam in this class.
