Roles of Student and Faculty Colleague

To make this experience as rewarding as possible, both students and faculty mentors should take an active role in the planning process.

Roles of the student

major responsibility for the four-year plan

  • Meets initially with faculty members to discuss interests, goals, and career opportunities
  • Selects a Faculty Colleague with similar philosophies who is interested and willing to assist in serving as a faculty mentor.
  • Creates a list of course possibilities and seeks advice from Faculty Colleague
  • Confers with a faculty member in each secondary interest area
  • Completes two rough draft versions of the Faculty Colleague Plan
    • Listing of courses by major, minor, general studies, etc.
    • Projecting possible semester-by-semester plan
  • Type two final versions
  • Signs and submits plan to Faculty Colleague for signature
  • Submits plan to Honors Program for final approval

Roles of Faculty Colleague

mentoring and advising role

  • Serves as a mentor to student
  • Guides student through process of the undergraduate experience
  • Makes recommendations for plan of study (may refer student to departmental advisor)
  • Approves final faculty colleague plan of study

Occasionally, faculty members feel more comfortable in the mentoring role than the academic advising role. It is suggested the faculty colleague and student meet with the departmental advisor to review the major curriculum and select courses. Some departmental advisors sign the plan of study as a second faculty colleague.

It is recommended that students and faculty colleagues meet at least one time each semester.
